NDDS was launched in the Autumn of 1997
following a very successful Mayoral Appeal by the then Mayor, Councillor
Jaswant Singh Baines. |
|
With considerable assistance from Age
Concern Northampton & County, one specially adapted minibus set out to
achieve the core aims of the Service
“Providing a Door to Door Service for
Residents of Northampton who cannot use Conventional Public Transport"
|
| With the rapid growth in membership, one
minibus soon became insufficient to provide the service
required. A successful application to the National
Lotteries Charities Board resulted in the addition
of two more vehicles to the service, the employment
of their four drivers and running costs for 3 years.
|
|
Although the
lottery Grant has expired, we have replaced all three of our original
buses with new ones, running on LPG. These have been leased over a 5
year period which shows the confidence that we have in the long term
viability of the service. A fourth bus has also been added to the
service which is specially racked for carrying shopping and runs a
regular service to supermarkets around the town
|
|
Weekends are
an especially lonely time for some of our members. The NDDS Out &
About program is designed to give them the opportunity for a gentle day
out. |
|
We try to target destinations which are suitable for our
members and not too far away. Destinations have included the London Eye,
local stately homes and, our most popular trips, a gentle afternoon ride
around the local countryside, stopping somewhere for afternoon tea |
|
In its short
operating life, NDDS has become invaluable to its members, and is, for
many, their way of maintaining their independence and quality of
life.
